In 1856, the Maryland State College of Agriculture was founded, and in 1920 it merged with the Baltimore professional schools to form a new University of Maryland. Its Baltimore campus was the University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMAB) (Chapter 480, Acts of 1920).
Through the merger of campuses and components of the University of Maryland with those formerly under the Board of Trustees of the State Universities and Colleges, the University of Maryland System was created in 1988 (Chapter 246, Acts of 1988). At that time, the University of Maryland at Baltimore was made part of the University of Maryland System. In 1997, the University of Maryland at Baltimore was renamed the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the System became the University System of Maryland (Chapter 114, Acts of 1997).
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMAB) offers professional and graduate instruction. It includes the schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work. Complementing these schools at the Baltimore City campus are the University of Maryland Medical System, which includes the University of Maryland Hospital, University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, R Adams Cawley Shock Trauma Center, and other research and public service centers.
Established in 1807 as the College of Medicine of Maryland, the University of Maryland School of Medicine is the fifth oldest medical school in the nation (Chapter 53, Acts of 1807).
The School of Nursing of the University of Maryland was founded in 1889.
With the School of Nursing, the Board is to develop partnerships with local health departments, hospitals, schools, community associations, businesses, and other entities that can help provide primary and preventive health care services through the Program. The Board with the School of Nursing solicits grants and donations on behalf of the Program, and develops a mechanism for receiving third-party reimbursement.
In 1840, the School of Pharmacy of the University of Maryland was founded as the Maryland College of Pharmacy.
DENTAL SCHOOL
Origins of the Dental School of the University of Maryland trace to 1840 when the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery was founded. The College later consolidated with the Maryland Dental College (founded in 1873), the Dental Department of the University of Maryland (founded in 1882), and the Dental Department of the Baltimore Medical College (founded in 1895).

GOVERNOR'S WELLMOBILE PROGRAM ADVISORY BOARD
The Governor's Wellmobile Program and the Governor's Wellmobile Program Advisory Board both formed within the School of Nursing in 2000 (Chapter 376, Acts of 2000). The Program delivers primary and preventive health care to geographically underserved communities and uninsured individuals. For the School of Nursing, the Program provides principal training sites to expand opportunities for students to learn the care of underserved populations.
