MARYLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JOINT COMMITTEE ON WELFARE REFORM

The Joint Committee on Welfare Reform was created in 1996 (Chapter 351, Acts of 1996). The Committee provides oversight of the Family Investment Program (of the Department of Human Resources) and other welfare benefits and services, including food stamps, housing, and medical assistance. The Committee studies issues related to State welfare programs; evaluates welfare demonstration projects; and seeks to initiate additional such projects.

To assist the Committee, the Secretary of Human Resources (with the Secretary of Housing and Community Development, and the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene) annually reports on welfare benefits and services; the status of welfare demonstration projects; and plans to initiate additional projects.
